About Shangri-La
Shangri-La is a 3,200m Tibetan town on the edge of the Tibetan plateau — renamed in 2001 to capitalize on the James Hilton novel that inspired the name. It is the cultural heartland of Tibetan Yunnan, with the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the province and a starting point for high-altitude treks into the Three Parallel Rivers region. Most travelers spend three to four days: a day acclimatizing and visiting the monastery, a day at Pudacuo National Park, and a day on the Tiger Leaping Gorge trail or in a Tibetan village.

Shangri-La is the Chinese name for Zhongdian, renamed in 2001 to capitalize on James Hilton's fictional 'Shangri-La' from Lost Horizon (1933). The town is the cultural capital of Tibetan Yunnan — Songzanlin Monastery, founded in 1679, is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan and a major pilgrimage site. Tibetan, Naxi and Yi minorities all live in the surrounding valleys.

Editor's pro tips
Five things we'd tell a friend before they go — the practical details you won't find in a brochure.
- Spend the first night at altitude (3,200m) before any hiking — altitude sickness is real and can ruin a trip
- Visit Songzanlin Monastery at sunrise — the morning chanting session and golden light on the roof are unforgettable
- Layer up — even in summer, temperatures drop 15°C from day to night
- Add Tiger Leaping Gorge (2h drive) if you have an extra day — one of the deepest gorges in the world
- Try the yak butter tea and tsampa — local Tibetan staples and surprisingly good once you adjust
